DALL-E

DALL-E 3 is OpenAI's image generation model. Note: it's now at end of life. OpenAI shifted its image generation to GPT Image, and DALL-E 3 was removed from the API on May 12, 2026. There is no standalone DALL-E subscription.

What is DALL-E used for?

DALL-E creates images from a text description: illustrations, marketing visuals, concepts, variations. Today it's accessed through ChatGPT, which switched to its own in-house image model. As a standalone product, DALL-E is no longer promoted by OpenAI: its interest is mostly historical now, and use is shifting toward newer generators.

DALL-E or Midjourney?

Compared to Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, or Flux, all more active and often stronger on artistic rendering, DALL-E shows its age. For a new project, it's better to turn to a maintained generator rather than a model on its way out.

How much does DALL-E cost?

There is no dedicated DALL-E subscription. Consumer access goes through ChatGPT Plus at $20/month (in the interface, about 50 images every 3 hours). For programmatic use, the historical API billed per image, around $0.04 for a square 1024x1024 format and $0.08 for wide formats, before its removal from the API.
