A reference cloud data warehouse, powerful and flexible, whose consumption model demands real cost governance.
Snowflake is a cloud data platform, one of the most widely used enterprise data warehouses. Its distinctive trait is separating compute from storage and billing strictly by consumption, across the three major clouds (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud), with automatic scaling.
Snowflake is used to centralize, store and query large volumes of data for analytics and BI. Data teams consolidate their sources, run SQL queries at scale, share data securely and feed reporting tools. It is a data infrastructure building block for data-driven organizations, often fed by a CDP like Segment.
Against warehouses built into each cloud, Snowflake stands out for multi-cloud independence, ease of scaling and data sharing. The downside is a consumption model that demands strict governance to avoid drift.
Snowflake bills by consumption: compute in credits (from around $2 per credit on Standard edition) and storage per terabyte (around $23/TB/month). There is no permanent free plan, but a 30-day trial with $400 of free credit. Cost depends entirely on volumes and usage.
