Comparison Brevo vs Mailchimp 2026: pricing, deliverability, automation, GDPR compliance, transactional email. Verdict for French SMBs and e-commerce.
Brevo (formerly Sendinblue) vs Mailchimp has become the email marketing comparison to settle in 2026 for a French SMB. On one side, a Paris-based company whose revenue multiplied by five in five years and is hosted in Europe. On the other, the American pioneer acquired by Intuit in 2021, with rising prices over the past three years and ongoing GDPR compliance debates.
We tested both platforms for six weeks: campaign sending, automation, deliverability, list management, transactional email. Here’s our verdict, profile by profile.
| Criteria | Weight |
|---|---|
| Pricing and rate structure | 25 |
| Deliverability (inbox rate, IP reputation) | 20 |
| Automation and workflows | 15 |
| GDPR compliance and hosting | 15 |

| Native transactional email | 10 |
The Radar Score displayed on each tool card uses this same scale.
Pricing: free up to 300 emails/day (unlimited contacts). Starter at €7/month for 5,000 emails/month. Business at €16/month. Hosting: France and Germany (OVH + AWS Frankfurt). Company: Brevo SA, headquartered in Paris. ~700 employees. Renamed from Sendinblue in 2023.
Brevo is no longer the challenger presented five years ago. Today, it's an all-in-one platform covering marketing campaigns, transactional, SMS, WhatsApp Business, chat, light CRM. The promise is clear: one tool instead of chaining three.
Pricing: Free for 500 contacts, 1,000 emails/month. Essentials at $13/month (500 contacts), quickly rising with volume. Standard at $20/month. Hosting: Mainly in the United States (AWS US-East), with EU DPA commitment. Company: Mailchimp / Intuit Inc., headquartered in Atlanta (Georgia). Acquired by Intuit for $12 billion in September 2021.
Mailchimp remains the most well-known brand in the sector — for many, "newsletter" equals Mailchimp. But since Intuit's acquisition, plans have been revamped three times, always resulting in an increase, and the product philosophy shifted from freelancers to target e-commerce.
This is where the gap is most evident. Brevo charges based on monthly sending volume; Mailchimp charges based on list size. For a standard newsletter sent four times a month to the entire base, Brevo is cheaper once you surpass ~1,000 contacts.
| Contacts | Estimated sends/month | Brevo | Mailchimp Essentials |
|---|---|---|---|
| 500 | 2,000 | free (300 emails/day) | $13/month |
| 5,000 | 20,000 | €25/month (Starter) | $75/month |
| 25,000 | 100,000 | €65/month (Business) | $270/month |
| 100,000 | 400,000 | €379/month | $1,080/month |
At 25,000 contacts, you pay ~4× less with Brevo. Mailchimp's "contact-based billing" model penalizes inactive lists: if half your contacts never read your campaigns, you still pay for them.
Verdict: Brevo, once you cross the 1,000 contact mark.
Both platforms have mature infrastructure with automatic management of DKIM, SPF, and DMARC, warmed shared IPs, internal suppression list, and soft and hard bounces management.
Our tests on 5 campaigns of 2,000 recipients each:
| Platform | Gmail Inbox | Outlook Inbox | Yahoo Inbox | Promotions/Spam |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brevo | 96% | 92% | 89% | 4% |
| Mailchimp | 95% | 94% | 91% | 4% |
Insignificant difference. On volumes of 100,000+ per month with good list hygiene, Mailchimp maintains a slight advantage due to its longer IP history in the US market. On volumes < 50,000/month in France, the difference disappears.
Verdict: draw. If you’re based in France and primarily send to French emails, Brevo is even slightly better (server proximity).
Mailchimp Customer Journeys is the most mature automation editor for the mass market. Nested conditional branches, native A/B tests on workflow emails, conditional contact re-entry, e-commerce integrations (Shopify/Woo abandoned cart in a few clicks).
Brevo Automation is visually simpler but covers 90% of SMB use cases: welcome series, customer birthdays, lead scoring, abandoned cart scenarios. The learning curve is gentler.
Verdict: Mailchimp if you're a growth marketer managing 10 workflows simultaneously. Brevo if you want to set up 3 scenarios in an afternoon and move on.
This is the structural differentiator. Brevo hosts its data in Europe (OVH France + AWS Frankfurt), with EU subcontractors. The DPO is reachable, DPA is in French, and the legal basis for processing is explicit.
Mailchimp hosts in the United States (AWS US-East). Since the invalidation of the Privacy Shield (Schrödinger II ruling, 2020), transferring personal data to the US requires standard contractual clauses + additional measures (encryption, pseudonymization). The Data Privacy Framework signed in 2023 between the EU and the USA partially resolved the issue but remains contested by GDPR associations (NOYB, La Quadrature).
In practice: if you're an SMB with a European client base and want to sleep soundly, Brevo radically simplifies your compliance.
Verdict: Brevo, clearly.
Brevo offers native transactional email on the same account as marketing campaigns: order confirmations, password resets, invoices. The SMTP and REST APIs are mature, documentation in French, and transactional deliverability is separated from marketing IPs (standard practice).
Mailchimp Transactional (formerly Mandrill) exists, but it's a separate product, billed separately, more expensive than its direct competitors (Postmark, SendGrid, Resend, Loops).
If you currently chain Mailchimp for campaigns + a Postmark or SendGrid next to it for transactional, Brevo saves you both a tool and an integration.
Verdict: Brevo, by far.
In the French market, the gap is very clear in favor of Brevo. In a US market, it’s the opposite.
