The reference planning software for complex projects and PMOs, robust but formal, best kept for those who genuinely need Gantt and resource management.
Microsoft Project is Microsoft's long-standing project management software, a reference for project managers doing detailed planning. It manages tasks, dependencies, resources and deadlines through Gantt charts, now available as per-user cloud plans in addition to the desktop version.
Microsoft Project is used to plan structured projects: break down the work, set dependencies, assign resources, track the critical path and manage a project portfolio. It targets organizations with formal methodologies (PMO, construction, industry) more than small agile teams, better served by tools like Asana or Monday.
Against Trello or ClickUp, Project offers far deeper planning (Gantt, resources, budgets) but with a steeper learning curve and more formalism. For simple team task management, a lighter tool is enough; for genuinely complex project control, Project remains solid.
In the cloud, Plan 1 is $10 per user per month, Plan 3 $30, Plan 5 around $55 (phased out of direct sale). Perpetual desktop licenses also exist (Project Standard and Professional), bought once.
