SaaS Radar Review
7/10

A very powerful, flexible e-commerce platform for established merchants, whose total cost and technical demands reserve it for large projects.

  • Very flexible and extensible
  • Free open-source version
  • Heavy technical implementation

Magento is a robust e-commerce platform, acquired by Adobe. It comes in two versions: Magento Open Source, free and self-hosted, and Adobe Commerce, the paid enterprise version with advanced features, cloud hosting and support. It targets stores with large catalogs and deep customization needs.

What is Magento used for?

Magento is used to run a complex online store: large catalogs, B2B and B2C sales, multi-store, multi-language and advanced pricing rules. Its flexibility and extensibility make it a choice for established merchants, at the price of substantial technical implementation and often an agency.

Magento or Shopify?

Against Shopify, Magento offers more control and customization, but demands far more technical resources. Shopify is faster to launch and managed; Magento suits high-volume merchants who want to control their platform. PrestaShop is a lighter open-source alternative.

How much does Magento cost?

Magento Open Source is free, with costs coming from hosting, development and extensions. Adobe Commerce is billed on quote, with enterprise pricing (often tens of thousands of euros a year) indexed to revenue and order volume.
