The reference pick for anyone wanting a genuinely private, open alternative to Notion, as long as you accept a still-developing maturity and collaboration layer.

Anytype is an open-source workspace built as an alternative to Notion, with a radical philosophy: local-first and end-to-end encrypted. Your data lives on your device first, syncs over a peer-to-peer network, and can even be self-hosted for full control.
You create rich pages, linked object databases, and workspaces, much like similar tools. The difference is in the architecture: nothing passes through a proprietary central server, encryption protects everything, and the open code guarantees no third party reads your notes. You build a personal wiki, a project tracker, or a knowledge base without handing your data to a company. It's the choice of users who refuse closed cloud services.
Compared to Notion, rich and collaborative but closed and cloud-hosted, Anytype offers openness, encryption, and self-hosting. Compared to Capacities, another privacy-focused alternative but with European cloud hosting, it pushes sovereignty further with local-first. In exchange, it's younger and its collaboration features are still in development.
Maturity still trails the leaders: some features and integrations are missing, and membership pricing is being reworked. The local-first model complicates real-time collaboration, and getting started means accepting a different logic than a typical cloud tool.
