SaaS Radar Review
7/10

A historic, full-featured sending platform built for very large mixed volumes, but heavy and priced in a way that splits API and marketing.

  • Proven infrastructure for very large volumes
  • API, SMTP, and marketing dashboard in one place
  • API and marketing billed separately, same shared quota

SendGrid is an email delivery platform published by Twilio, one of the industry's historic references. It's used to send high volumes of transactional emails (confirmations, password resets, notifications) via API, as well as marketing campaigns from a dashboard.

What is SendGrid for?

Developers plug in the API or SMTP relay to send emails triggered by the application, with detailed deliverability tracking (opens, clicks, bounces, spam). The Marketing Campaigns side adds a campaign editor, segmentation, automations, and A/B testing. SendGrid handles authentication (SPF, DKIM), dedicated IPs, and infrastructure built for millions of sends, making it a common choice for technical teams that want to hand off deliverability.

SendGrid or Resend and Postmark?

Compared to Resend, more modern and built for developers, or Postmark, known for transactional deliverability, SendGrid is older, more complete, but also heavier. For pure marketing, Brevo or Mailchimp fit better. SendGrid shines on very large mixed volumes.

What are the limits of SendGrid?

Pricing splits API and marketing into two separate subscriptions that still share the same volume quota, which surprises people. The permanent free plan has been replaced by a 60-day trial, and support on the lower tiers is considered slow.

Frequently asked questions about SendGrid

Is SendGrid free?
SendGrid no longer has a permanent free plan: it offers a 60-day trial capped at 100 emails per day. The sending API then starts at $19.95/month for the Essentials plan (up to 100,000 emails).
SendGrid or Resend?
SendGrid is older, more complete, and built for very large mixed volumes; Resend is more modern and focused on developer experience. For a recent project, Resend is often simpler; SendGrid dominates on large historical volumes.
Is marketing included in SendGrid?
No, Marketing Campaigns is billed separately from the sending API, and both subscriptions share the same monthly volume quota. You need to pay for two plans to combine transactional and marketing.
