Outline is a team wiki and knowledge base known for its speed and polished editor. Its defining trait: the software is open source and self-hostable, while also offering a managed cloud version for teams that don't want to deal with infrastructure.

What is Outline used for?

You document processes, meeting notes, guides, and know-how, organized into collections with fast search. The markdown editor is smooth, documents nest cleanly, and integrations (Slack in particular) keep the knowledge base active. Since the code is open, a technical team can host it on its own servers for full control over its data, which appeals to organizations concerned about data sovereignty.

Outline or Slite and Notion?

Compared to Slite, turnkey with a more advanced AI, Outline bets on openness and self-hosting. Compared to Notion, richer but closed, it's lighter, faster, and controllable end to end. For a team that wants a clean wiki without depending on a vendor, it's an excellent compromise.

What are Outline's limitations?

Self-hosting requires technical skills and ongoing maintenance. The cloud version removes that constraint but stays a focused wiki: no application database or project management like the Swiss Army knife tools offer. Its AI features are more limited than those of newer competitors.
